How to Measure Your Wrist for a Bracelet

How do I measure my wrist for a bracelet?

Wrap a piece of thread once around the narrowest part of your wrist, just below the wrist bone, mark the point where the thread overlaps itself, then lay the thread flat next to a ruler and read the length in centimetres. That is your bare wrist measurement.

You do not need a tailor's measuring tape. Thread, a strip of paper, a phone charging cable, a shoelace, all of them work. The four steps below take under a minute.

  • Step 1. Find the narrowest point of your wrist. It sits just below the wrist bone, on the hand side of it, not up the forearm.
  • Step 2. Wrap your thread once around that point. Snug enough that it stays put, loose enough that you can slide a fingertip under it.
  • Step 3. Mark the overlap. Pinch it, or make a pen mark on the thread where the free end crosses the start.
  • Step 4. Lay the thread flat against a ruler and read from the end to your mark. Round to the nearest half centimetre.

What if I do not have thread or a ruler?

Use a strip of paper and a currency note: a Pakistani banknote is about 65 mm tall on the short edge, so laying two of them end to end gives you 13 cm to check a paper strip against.

A phone works too. Most phones are between 14.5 and 16 cm tall, and the exact height is in the phone's specifications, which is a quick search away. Mark your paper strip, hold it against the phone, and estimate.

If you already own a bracelet that fits the way you like, skip all of this. Lay it flat in a circle, measure straight across the middle to get the diameter in centimetres, and multiply by 3.14. That gives you the finished length of a bracelet you already know works, which is more useful than a wrist measurement.

Which bracelet size matches my wrist?

A bare wrist of 13 to 14 cm takes size S, 15.5 to 16.5 cm takes M, and 17 to 18 cm takes L; anything over 18 cm is better made to measure.

The table reads bare wrist first, because that is the number you just measured. The finished length column is what the bracelet itself measures once made, with ease already added.

How much ease should I add for elastic versus a clasp?

Add about 1.5 cm to your bare wrist for an elastic beaded bracelet and about 2 cm for a clasped one, because a clasp cannot stretch over the wrist bone and needs the extra room to sit rather than grip.

Elastic is forgiving in one direction only. It will stretch to get over your hand, but it will not grow to fit a bracelet that was strung too short in the first place. Strung too long, it slides down over the hand and gets caught on things. The 1.5 cm figure is roughly the point where it clears the wrist bone and still stays put.

A clasped bracelet with a chain extender solves the problem differently: instead of one length, you get a range. Our Lilac Daisy Pearl Bracelet adjusts from 16 to 19 cm and our Daisy Charm Chain Bracelet from 16 to 20 cm. If you are between sizes, or measuring for someone else, an extender is the safer buy every time.

One more thing worth knowing before you order: a chunky bead takes up more of the circle than a small one. A stack of 8 mm beads will feel tighter than a fine daisy chain at exactly the same stated length, because the beads themselves sit further from your skin. If you like wearing stacked bracelets, err half a centimetre longer.

Which size fits most people?

M at 17 cm finished is the size I make first when nobody has told me a measurement, because it suits a bare wrist of roughly 15.5 to 16.5 cm and that covers a lot of adult wrists.

Treat that as a working rule from my own bench rather than a statistic, because I have not measured a representative sample of anybody. Teenagers and children usually land in S. Larger wrists usually need L or a custom length. If you are within half a centimetre of a boundary in the table above, go up rather than down: a bracelet that is slightly loose gets worn, and one that is slightly tight sits in a drawer.

This is why every listing carries a wrist size rather than a vague small, medium and large. Fifteen, seventeen and nineteen centimetres are real numbers you can check against a thread, and a piece that fits properly is a piece that gets worn.

How do I buy a bracelet as a gift without asking her size?

Choose an adjustable piece with a chain extender, or measure a bracelet she already wears while she is not wearing it.

The extender route is the least suspicious. A bracelet that adjusts from 16 to 20 cm covers most adult wrists, and nobody has to be asked anything. Both our chain pieces work this way.

If you would rather guess a fixed size, M at 17 cm is the safest single guess for an adult, and S at 15 cm for a teenager. If it misses, our returns policy gives you 7 days from delivery to ask for an exchange, provided the piece is unworn with its tags on. We will ship the replacement without charging shipping again if we have the variant in stock.

The sneakiest method: borrow a bracelet she owns, lay it flat, measure across the circle and multiply by 3.14. Put it back before she notices.

Can you make a bracelet to my exact wrist size?

Yes. Every piece we make is customisable, and the custom order form has a field for exactly this: tell us your wrist measurement in centimetres and we will string to it.

Write the bare wrist number, not the length you think the bracelet should be, and say whether you like your bracelets snug or loose. We will add the ease. If you send us a finished length instead, say so clearly, because the two numbers are 1.5 to 2 cm apart and getting them confused is the one mistake that costs a remake.

Custom pieces cost the same as the listed price unless you are asking for extra materials such as an initial charm or a longer strand, and we quote before making anything. Delivery is Rs 200 flat nationwide, free over Rs 2,500, and the piece takes 1 to 2 working days to make before it goes to the courier.

What if the bracelet still does not fit when it arrives?

Message us on Instagram within 7 days of delivery with your order number, and if the piece is unworn with its tags attached we will exchange it for the right size.

For elastic pieces that are only slightly out, a restring is often quicker than a return, and it means the beads you chose stay with you. Ask and we will tell you which is faster.

Karachi orders reach us and come back quickly, usually 1 to 2 working days each way. Elsewhere in Pakistan it is 3 to 5 working days per direction, so measuring properly the first time is worth the minute it takes.

Common questions

How do I measure my wrist without a measuring tape?
Wrap a piece of thread, paper strip or charging cable once around the narrowest part of your wrist, mark where it overlaps, then lay it flat against any ruler. Read the centimetres and round to the nearest half. It is as accurate as a tailor's tape for this purpose.
Should I measure tight or loose?
Measure snug against the skin, with the thread touching all the way round but not pressing in. That gives your true bare wrist. Ease is added afterwards, roughly 1.5 cm for elastic and 2 cm for a clasp, so measuring loose only doubles up the allowance and gives a bracelet that slides.
What size bracelet should I buy as a gift?
Pick an adjustable chain piece with an extender if you can, since 16 to 20 cm fits most adult wrists. If you must choose a fixed size, M at 17 cm is the safest guess for an adult and S at 15 cm for a teenager, and unworn pieces can be exchanged within 7 days.
Do beaded bracelets stretch over time?
Elastic ones relax a little with wear, usually gaining a few millimetres over months rather than stretching dramatically. Clasped pieces do not stretch at all. If an elastic bracelet starts sliding off, it is ready for a restring rather than a replacement, and we can do that for you.
